ORC World Championship: a “sea” of human rights and solidarity!
ActionAid and the IYFR Fleet of Central Adriatic together for rights and social justice
It’s the most expected sporting event in Marche Region, which will see hundreds of sailing boats and crews from all over the world. It is the ORC World Championship, the international offshore sailing to be held in Ancona from June 21st to 29th, set in the village of Marina Dorica.
Among this extraordinary event, the ORC Championship Committee desires to give space to solidarity, remembering that sport is an important instrument of social integration and cooperation.
In this context, ActionAid, an independent international organization committed to fight the causes of poverty, and the IYFR Fleet of Central Adriatic Sea, along with the three Rotary Clubs Ancona - Conero, Ancona 25/35 and Ancona, have decided to work together to raise awareness among young people on values of social justice, solidarity and respect for fundamental human rights. These organizations are thus joined together to develop the project "A sea of human rights and solidarity", an educational proposal that, from this important event, will involve pupils of comprehensive schools of Ancona, with a focus on food right and food waste.
The ORC championship will therefore be the launching pad for this project, where the children will be involved through various initiatives. First of all, the drawing competition "A sea of human rights and solidarity" aimed at children aged 6 to 12 years. The children are invited to express their creativity to tell how we can defend the rights of people near and far through the sea. To enter the competition, please visit the regulation on the facebook page of "ActionAid Ancona" or on the website www.actionaid.it. The works received will be exhibited during the days of the ORC Championship at Marina Dorica and will be awarded on June 25th at 18.00 pm, at the end of an afternoon during which will be organized workshops and activities for little ones from 16.00 pm!
The project will then continue with the beginning of the next school year. Thanks to the support of the IYFR Fleet of Central Adriatic and the three Rotary Club of Ancona, comprehensive schools will be able to experiment the ActionAid training "I eat everything! No food in the garbage "and realize in-class workshops to reflect on this important issue. For ActionAid, in order to contrast the causes of poverty, the education to sustainable way of life and consumption is crucial. The awareness of not wasting, especially in a period of crisis, it is important to start this change and to eradicate the root causes of hunger.
Charitable initiatives do not end there! The IYFR Fleet of Central Adriatic will start during the days of the Championship, a collection of abandoned or disused life jackets, but in good condition, for the project "A life-vest for life" promoted by the Italian fleets of the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians. The vests will be allocated to fishing communities in Africa - Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania - where this mean of safety is often unknown.
